Greetings. I am the Big Hippo on Campus. My transportation specialist is currently studying History at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas in the United States. In a few short weeks he will be traveling to Tokyo, Japan, to study at Aoyama Gakuin University from April through August. My intention is to use this blog to record our experiences during our stay in the Land of the Rising Sun, with special emphasis on the locations and sights we visit.
With more than a month before our journey begins however, it seems prudent to use this time to share some shots of me around campus at our home university, both as an explanation of where we come from, and as practice for describing locations in and around Aoyama’s Campus in Japan.
Many hours have been spent researching and studying various topics. My transportation specialist’s focus is history, but he has also written English and philosophy papers of varying quality. There are plentiful tables and rooms on all four floors including the basement for individual and group study, as well as computer and printing services. The knowledgeable staff is always ready to assist visitors in any way possible.
Here I am overlooking the Plaza of the Heroines in front of Ablah Library. In the background can be seen Jabara Hall, home to the math, physics, and statistics departments as well as the computer science and psychology departments. This picture is taken from the third floor of Ablah Library, facing west. The third floor is where most of the books on various nations are housed. I’ve spent a bit of time in the Japan section that’s for sure. I also found these gems. Should be useful as I prepare for our trip overseas. My transportation specialist is currently taking Japanese classes at Wichita State, but unfortunate policies regarding the enrollment status of stuffed species inhibits my options. In the meantime, I’m packing as much kanji as will fit in my stuffed noggin before leaving.
One last thing before sign off for today. As you may have noticed, I am a plushie. My audible vocabulary is limited to the word hippo and portions thereof. There are unlikely to be any YouTube telecasts with this blog. While I am able type better than your average cat on the internet, I do run like a Muppet. I’m told this is entertaining to watch, but in the interest of timely transits, I usually employ a transportation specialist to get me where I need to be. He also handles camera duties on occasion. Anything that’s out of focus, blame on him. Currently he’s using the bag pictured above for BHOC (Big Hippo on Campus or キャンパスの沖半ば in Japanese) transportation. Watching backwards on our trips gives me motion sickness sometimes, but it’s much better than being completely inside the bag where I can’t see at all.
Having made a beginning on this I will sign off for today. Next time there will be more pictures of me from around Wichita State’s campus, showcasing more of the buildings where my transportation specialist has had classes.
Until then, Hippo! Hippo!
